On 13 November 2025, as dusk settled over the Lowveld and the sky faded into soft golds and purples, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve marked an extraordinary moment in its conservation journey. Under careful supervision, a number of southern white Rhino were offloaded into their temporary boma — part of the broader translocation of Rhinos being rewilded into the Greater Kruger landscape through African Parks’ Rhino Rewild Initiative, in partnership with GKEPF.

This was not just a delivery — it was the beginning of a new chapter for a keystone species. The trucks rolled out later that night, leaving the Rhino to rest quietly in the safety of their temporary holding area. With first light the next morning, the boma gates were opened, and one by one, the Rhino stepped into the wild spaces of Klaserie — choosing their own paths, beginning their next chapter on their own terms.
Restoring a Keystone Species to a Landscape Built for Their Future
The Greater Kruger ecosystem remains one of the most suitable habitats for white Rhino — a vast, connected wilderness supported by proven security networks and abundant, year-round grazing.
Each Rhino was translocated under stringent veterinary care, dehorned for their safety, and uniquely marked through microchipping, ear notching, and colour-coded tags to support monitoring across the open system. These measures ensure that each individual can be closely followed as it settles, disperses naturally and integrates into the broader population.

A Collective Effort Rooted in Partnership
This historic operation reflects the strength of Africa’s conservation partnerships: African Parks, GKEPF, SANParks collaborators, veterinary experts, reserve managers, air support teams, and dedicated field personnel — all working as one.
Within Klaserie, the success of this operation hinged on the dedication of our internal teams. From coordinating secure access routes at dusk, to the preparation of the boma, and ensuring smooth nighttime departures — every person played an essential role in bringing this moment to life.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Klaserie Team
To our rangers who guided the convoy safely into the reserve as daylight faded, to the monitoring team who oversaw the settling of the animals through the night, to our ground crews coordinating logistics, communication, and readiness for the dawn release, to our operations and management teams who held the bigger picture from planning to execution — Thank you.
Your commitment, professionalism and calm under pressure ensured that each Rhino arrived safely, rested securely overnight, and stepped into the Klaserie landscape with the best possible start.

Rewilding Hope
When the boma gates opened at sunrise, the bush was quiet. The Rhino moved slowly at first — pausing, listening — then walked confidently into the wilderness. Some wandered straight into the mopane woodlands; others grazed nearby before drifting out of sight. It was a moment of quiet significance: a return, a renewal, and a promise.
This initiative is more than a logistical achievement. It is a symbol of resilience — of what is possible when people, organisations and landscapes unite for a shared purpose. Klaserie is honoured to contribute to this monumental conservation effort. Together with our partners, we remain committed to safeguarding these Rhino, nurturing the ecosystems that support them, and ensuring a secure future for the generations to come.
Together, we are rebuilding what was nearly lost — and securing a future where Rhino can truly thrive.
